Flowkey is a simple and constructive way to learn piano. The app is available for both Apple and Android devices. It has a bit of everything, including theory, piano history, and popular tunes that you can play on the piano.
A piano app can give you the structure to build skills and practice what you learn. You can even try free trials of a few different apps before making your final decision. Once you decide which app best suits your needs, download it and start creating music!
You can teach yourself to play piano with an app. Most piano apps show you the basics. This can include note names, the grand staff, chords, proper hand position, and more. Some apps use games to teach theory, while others are directed toward serious learners. Piano apps can be a fun and low-stress way for kids and adults to learn to play the piano.
Most beginners learn the basics of the piano after one month. Students can become familiar with note names, note values, and the grand staff. They can begin to put both hands together after playing the piano for a few weeks. After six months of regular practice, beginning piano students can become comfortable playing simple pop songs and classical music.
I also think that piano apps are perfect for kids as kids love having visuals presented to them in new and fun ways. Kids may find their instructors boring, but when they play with an iPad or iPhone, they can almost start viewing lessons as playing games.
One of the more well-known piano apps is JoyTunes. This is filled with great knowledge and it works really well for beginners of all ages. Like a lot of these programs, it comes with a good choice of songs to learn and play along with.
Playground Sessions is a unique take on online piano lessons that offers something for all ages. If you're starting from scratch and looking for in-depth lessons and a massive song library that includes backing bands to accompany you - meet Playground Sessions.
My opinion of this piano app is that is almost perfect. This can be loaded up on your device and it looks like a real piano. I personally think this is the most in-depth learning tool out there on the market. This product helps you improve your rhythm, sight-reading, and your technique all while having fun.
Piano Maestro is definitely geared more towards the beginner who is on the younger spectrum. The recommended age is 4+, but you really could use it at any age. I believe this app is probably the most recommended by instructors as it allows your teacher to keep track of your progress without even being in the same room.
Skoove is the best piano app to learn from. It takes you right from the start, including how to sit at the piano and all-important hand position at the keyboard, right through to playing the songs you love with two hands.
Are there any that will work with an out of tune piano? Mine is old and is a half step flat. The piano tuner says it will be costly and potentially damage the piano to get it into tune. So basically all the apps are useless unless they can adjust to the tune of my piano. Help!!
I really liked the game. It was good- non glitchy and they explain well. The first lesson was easy for me even though I have never played piano, except they make you rate to proceed onto the 2nd lesson. But after you rate it you have to like them of Facebook for lesson 3. I deleted the game. :('
It can do this because it uses your device's microphone, listening out for the notes you play. However, you can also connect it to your instrument through USB-to-MIDI if you have a digital piano or keyboard.
However, it doesn't teach you how to read music or learn music theory, and it won't teach you piano technique. This is fine for a complete beginner, but as you improve and want to play harder and harder pieces, technique becomes very important.
Hi, this post is very useful, so thanks for writing it. I do have a question. Aside from getting a piano teacher, can you advice on an additional piece (book, website etc) to learn sheet music and music theory? Thanks again.
I do not generally post reviews, but I must post one here. I have been using FlowKey for about 5 months (beg/inter). I love the app. The choice of songs, the music sheets, the finger positions etc. It is a great app and I did look at others. Sticking with this one. Highly recommended to people who want to play and do not want to go to piano lessons. And NO, it does not replace a piano teacher, but it is close to having one and a lot of fun.
Did piano for a year only so can only read the basics. Really want to learn to read music but cant go to lessons right now what would be the best app to use? Have a pretty good ear for music and play from sound but cant read it
I like that Skoove breaks songs up into more manageable sections for you to learn piece by piece, however many of the full songs are really only small sections of the actual songs they are inspired by or too simplified without also having the option of a more difficult version of the song. So after 6 weeks, I had already advanced through the beginner and intermediate lessons on Skoove, and even in the Advanced lessons, the songs still only seem to be sections of the full songs, rather than full songs. So while, I like Skoove as an app, it is not for me long term.
As a recovering stroke victim, the piano has been good therapy. Sometimes I practice for an hr or more a day. Other times less. An article I read suggested to move the piano into the lounge room and practice during the ad breaks on the tv for those who are time poor (with my head phones on). In a few minute blocks during your evening TV is enough regular practice.
I was seriously considering The One but after your review having 2nd thoughts. I'm music lover but a total beginner on the piano or any musical instrument (other than 2 years of tenor sax in HS - though I was s***!) What would you recommend for a digital piano that has great sound, attractive looking (looks like a real piano) will grow with me as a pianist, make it fun, and so on? Thanks,
Nice review, but I wouldn't be too hard on them regarding the mdf. Mdf is very popular in cabinet making. For those who don't really know, many, if not most kitchen cabinets, or even cabinets around the home, are made from laminated mdf and are never questioned. Mdf is made of real wood fibers held together by wax or resin and can actaully by quite strong. A true solid hardwood would add tremendous expense and weight to the piece, if done right. Sorry, your review shows great points regarding the piano, but I just wanted to clarify that for those who don't understand what mdf was.
I understand MDF construction and know it is better in many ways and common in digital pianos. However, for a long time the One Piano web site was claiming that their piano was all (solid) wood...which it is not. I talked to them about it as well so I just wanted to be sure that people were not mislead into believing the One Piano was something that it is not. Beyond that point, the construction itself seems to be good and equal to many other digital pianos, although the black wood tone vinyl outer layering is just OK.
Whether you want your kids to learn the piano or try it for fun yourself, there are quality piano apps available today. It is not the simplest instrument to learn, but your smartphone can help you learn about the keyboard keys and reading sheet music.
Although an app isn't a complete substitute for learning from a professional, you can still benefit from a piano app. These apps have tutorials, lessons, and recordings you can take advantage of to improve your skill.
